Use brand-new batteries — reusing old ones often doesn't deliver enough power. Most remotes take 2 AA or AAA batteries.
Make sure the + and − ends match the markings inside the compartment. One backwards battery stops everything.
Take out the batteries, then hold any button for 30 seconds to drain any residual charge. Reinsert fresh batteries and try again.
Open your phone's camera app and point the remote's front end at it. Press and hold the Power button — you should see a purple or white flash on screen. No flash means the remote isn't transmitting.
Some Sony remotes have a two-part compartment that isn't obvious. Check the diagram printed inside the cover and make sure both halves are fully seated.
Search your TV or device model number plus "owner's manual" — most manufacturers post PDFs. The manual often has a pairing or reset procedure specific to your model.
Samsung Voice Remotes, LG Magic Remotes (AN-MR series), and Sony voice remotes need to be paired before they work. Search "[brand] [model number] remote pairing" for the exact steps.
Solar remotes ship partially charged and need a full charge before first use. Hold the remote face-up under bright indoor or outdoor light for 2–3 hours.
